American Like Me: Reflections on Life Between Cultures
The first book I chose to read is called American Like Me, compiled and edited by America Ferrera. I picked this book because the storyline resonated with me the most. "American Like Me" is based on the personal experiences of America Ferrera, an award-winning actress in the television show "Ugly Betty." In the book, Ferrera describes her experience as a Honduran immigrant and the struggles she encountered as a multicultural American. The book explores the different perspectives of American immigrants who came from different backgrounds sharing the same type of issues being a misfit in American society.
As a 1.5 generation immigrant, I experienced some similar challenges as Ferrera. Therefore, it is interesting to read about her immigration and assimilation journey. I think this book is inspiring because this is through the perspective of someone who overcame adversity to live the American dream. Through her struggles and perseverance, she now is one of the most recognized actresses.
In chapter 1, America describes her first heartache from a boy she had a crush on in grade school. He told her he did not like her because she did not have blue eyes and blonde hair. It was fascinating to view the story through her lens and progressively witness on she perceives herself. Additionally, we were able to get a sense of her family dynamic and the mentality behind her immigrant parents. The concept that regardless of skin color, race, or social status, hard work is the key to success. So far, the tone and the writing style by Ferrera has been entertaining and fun to read. Although I am only a few chapters in, I am excited to read the rest of the book!
