Alice
As midterm season hits and assignments compiled, I have decided to invest in a new Korean drama called Alice. Was that a smart choice? The answer is… probably not. However, I did it anyway. Giving the current situations, I believe by watching television shows, movies, or foreign dramas is the best way to escape the reality around us. I’m not sure if this is the best coping mechanism, but it definitely is fun to submerge ourselves to a virtual experience for an hour or two.
Alice is a drama that deals with time-traveling in the year 2050. Alice is an organization that provides time-traveling services for people who had a tragic past. During a mission to uncover the book of prophecy (the future of time-traveling), agent Tae Yi realized she is pregnant with her partner Min Hyuk's child. Due to the time-traveling radiation risk, Min Hyuk urges Tae Yi to abort the baby. However, she refused and decided to stay in the year 1992 to raise the baby alone.
Soon, the child was born. Unfortunately, Jin Gyeom was born with an emotionless disorder, a side effect of radiation exposure. Growing up, Jin Gyeom always assumed his mother was an ordinary stay at home mom until she was murder in his senior year of high school. The death of his mother traumatized Jin Gyeom and inspired him to become a detective. Years later, as detective Jin Gyeom was crossing the street, he saw a woman that looks exactly like his past mother. This shocking discovery has led Jin Gyeom to look into this mother-look-alike doppelganger, Tae Yi. He was surprised to find that this woman is a professor in the physics department. Her aspiration was to create a time machine to revisit her past. Knowing the uncanny resemblance, Jin Gyeom joins Tae Yi's research lab in hopes to find answers to his mother's murder case.
So far, I think this drama is very interesting. A little different from most of the melodrama with the theme of a wealthy heir falling in love with the housekeeper’s daughter. The plot of this show is quite complex, so I am excited to see how the writers are connecting the past, present, and future.

Emily this sounds like a really good show. I agree with your last statement that it is definitely a little different from the melodramatic themes we typically see in American TV. Right now it is so important that we find things that bring us joy and peace amidst all the madness, so even though I'm sure you're stressed during midterms season, at least you have something to look forward to on your study breaks! Good luck with your exams
ReplyDeleteEmily, thanks for a great post! I loved your introduction, I can totally relate. I always start shows at the worst times. I think delving into stories is a great way to escape from reality and the stresses of our surroundings. The show sounds really interesting, and has a little bit of everything. Good luck with midterm season!
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing Emily! Your opening statement is amazing because I'm pretty sure we can all say we get ourselves distracted all the time during finals. The plot seems ridiculously interesting and I feel like the show will get very exciting with the aspect of time travel. I'm definitely going to add this to my watchlist.
