Emily in Paris: Netflix hit's creator Darren Star 'not sorry' for 'clichés' - BBC News

For random post #2, I felt like it is only fair for me to keep you all updated on shows that I am binging and my feelings about the end of the semester. As for the shows that I recently watched, I just finished Emily in Paris on Netflix, and I felt that the show is fun and lighthearted. The story revolves around Emily, who is an American marketing employee that ended up moving to Paris for her firm to provide an American perspective. The move turned her life upside down and gave her the adventure of a lifetime. When Emily was in Chicago, she had her life planned out with a perfect boyfriend and dream job. However, after moving to Paris, she is starting from a blank canvas. Emily is now living in a beautiful foreign city alone and unable to speak the language. Her journey is definitely exciting, but there are many new challenges she will face with her boss, clients, and her new admirers. Watching Emily in Paris when the rest of America is in quarantine, I can’t help but feel envious of the character. It's almost been a year since Covid-19 started, and I just can't wait for this to be over and to start traveling again.

The second show that I am watching is called Start-up. The Start-up is a Korean Drama that is airing on Netflix. The genre of this drama is a romantic comedy that explores the tech startup industry. I think this drama came out at the appropriate time since the startup is the new trend and the future. We often hear the success stories of companies like Robinhood, Facebook, Doordash, and more. However, I think people often forget to acknowledge the hardship and possible failures that come with startups. Every year there are roughly 300 million startups in the United States, and only a small hand full of the company made a name for themselves. With that, this means the majority of the companies did not make it or acquired by a large conglomerate. Therefore, this Korean Drama covers some of that reality. It penetrates some of that harsh reality while incorporating the value of friendship, love, and family. So far, I think it’s very funny and interesting, so I highly recommend it!

Moving on to the last topic- We made it to week 10! As my last semester coming to an end, I can’t help but feel a little unfinished. I’m not sure if other seniors can relate, but this year is definitely interesting. Although I am grateful for all the friendship and opportunities that the USC offers, I am quite disappointed to conclude my college career online. Hopefully, when Covid-19 is over, I can still feel the excitement of graduation.

  1. I definitely feel envious of the character too; I think I'm probably going to travel for a while after graduation. I find it interesting that people often forget to acknowledge the failures that come with startups, but that's probably just me taking business classes. The professors always emphasize how risky startups are. I also can't help but feel unfinished. 3 of my 8 semesters at college won't even be on campus. Great post!

  2. Hi Emily, I really enjoyed your post! I also binge-watched Emily in Paris, and although I did find it cringey at times, I did love watching her explore Paris. I was abroad last semester and I visited Paris one of my last weekends there. It was absolutely magical, and I too can't wait until I can travel again soon. I completely share the same sentiments about feeling dissapointed about senior year. I feel like I'm missing out and we don't get closure. I hope we can have an in-person graduation soon!

  3. Hi Emily, I also binge-watched Emily in Paris! Having been to Paris many times, it was hysterically humorous how relevant/similar most of the scenes were.It was a great TV show of a beautiful city that I just love. I do not usually binge watch, but Emily in Paris just made me keep on watching and watching as I love Paris and the French culture so much. Agreed on the sentiment of graduation and senior year... Let's all stay positive.

  4. Wonderful post! I love Paris and I've had my eye on Emily in Paris. Thank you for providing me with some context. I'll definitely check it out! Not sure why, but this show reminds me of The Queen's Gambit. Since the shows seem so different, the commonality that is capturing my attention must be that both shows feature a female lead.

Like you, I am grateful for the opportunities afforded me by USC. I really hope that 2021 is better than 2020. I'm a senior and its depressing to consider graduating remotely. C'est la vie. We'll make it through and do that public-accounting work!

  5. Hi Emily, I thoroughly enjoyed reading your post. I know I'm going to have a ton of time over our extended winter break and need some shows to watch, so I'm glad you were able to give a positive review on Emily in Paris. I'll be sure to check it out. I also agree with your statement on college feeling unfinished to graduate as a senior online. But in the end, all we can do is keep our heads high.
